About Yakutia


Yakutia (also known as the Sakha Republic) is an ideal place for romantic travelers. This is the land of the thick wilds of taiga and the vast expanses of tundra, the harsh mountain ranges and the boundless icy Arctic, the original culture and kind hearted people. It is not surprising that the national parks of Yakutia attract not only the republic itself, but also scientists, researchers and major organizations like UNESCO.

Yakutia is one of the fastest growing regions of Russia with a high investment potential.

The gross regional product (GRP) of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for 2017 amounted to 914 billion rubles.

Investments in fixed assets of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) for 2017 - 384.9 billion rubles. In January-September 2018, the volume of investments in fixed assets was formed in the amount of 280.2 billion rubles, with a 10.0% increase in constant prices by January-September 2017.

The implementation of major investment projects continues: construction of the Power of Siberia gas pipeline (Gazprom Transgaz Tomsk LLC), arrangement of the Chayanda oil and gas condensate field (Gazprom dobycha Noyabrsk LLC), development of Talakan and Alinsky fields (Surgutneftegaz PJSC), development of the Elga coal complex (Mechel PJSC), development of the Verkhne-Munskoye (Upper Muna) diamond ore field (ALROSA PJSC) and others. Planned commissioning of large objects: in April 2018, the Denisovskaya concentrator was commissioned; in September, the Gross mine was commissioned; a new water intake and wastewater treatment plant was launched in Yakutsk. The Verkhne-Munskoye diamond deposit was launched, the production at the Vertikal’noye silver deposit started. The road works plan envisages the introduction of the Amga highway. The Tommot-Yakutsk complex (N. Bestyakh) was commissioned. The volume of investments in fixed assets for 2018 is estimated at 401.6 billion rubles, which is 101.3% in constant prices by 2017.

In terms of the volume of foreign trade, Yakutia ranks 3rd among the entities of the Far Eastern Federal District, and in terms of export volumes – 2nd in the Far Eastern Federal District following the Sakhalin Oblast.

Companies of Yakutia carry out foreign economic activity with 52 countries. The premiere trade partners are non-CIS countries. Large Yakutia export supply is carried out to Belgium (50%), India (18%), Israel (10%), China (6%), UAE (5%), Hong Kong (3%) and Japan (2%).

Domestic flights - regular flights to Yakutsk take off from all major cities of the Far East, as well as from Moscow and St. Petersburg. In the summer, the number of air routes increases, for example, you can fly to Yakutsk from resort Sochi. The flight from Moscow to Yakutsk takes about 7 hours.

International flights - there is a permanent flight connection with South Korea, China, and charters from Vietnam and Thailand open in the summer. In the summer, Yakutia Airlines performs flights to Yakutsk from Anchorage (Alaska, USA) with a transfer at the airport of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.


You can get to Yakutia by train as well - there is an active railway connection. The nearest station to Yakutsk, to which inter-regional transportation is carried out, is Tommot, from there you can continue to get to the capital by automobile road. The journey from Moscow to Tommot will take almost 6 days.


This travel option is one of the most extreme, because the difficult road to Yakutia is always a challenge for car enthusiasts, but on the way you can see all of Russia. The crossing over the Lena River in the summer is carried out on the ferry, in the winter - on a winter ice road along the river. The distance from Moscow to Yakutsk by car is 8370 km.


Yakutia is rightfully called the natural treasury. Diamond deposits in Western Yakutia and gold deposits in the Aldan, Indigirka and Yana river basins are widely known. The republic is rich in natural resources, more than 90% of diamonds and 40% of Russia's gold are mined here.


Many people from all over the world are interested in the ancient fauna, especially the mammoth. Significant part of all unique finds of mammoths, woolly rhinos, bison, musk oxen, cave lions and other animals of bygone era has been found in the depths of Yakutia. Only in Yakutia it is still possible to find well-preserved remains of the mammoth and woolly rhinoceros. The World Mammoth Center project is being implemented in the region, which, due to the uniqueness and value of its exposition, should be considered as a national museum and research complex of federal significance.


One of the most attractive places for tourists is the ‘Lena Pillars’ Natural Park. This unique natural phenomenon is located right on the banks of the great Lena River. In the bizarre shape of the pillars one can see the colonnades, towers, arches, cathedrals, and battlements. The remains of mammoths, bison and other animals found here remind of the fauna of ancient times.


On the territory of the republic, in Oymyakon, there is the Pole of Cold in the northern hemisphere of the planet, where the lowest temperature is recorded (-71.2 С) on the inhabited earth. Here, on the Pole of Cold, every year in March the traditional Festival of Tourism takes place, which brings together real travelers, who without exaggeration can be called true explorers of the Earth.

In the same place, in Oymyakon there is the legendary Labynkyr lake. It is famous for information about "northern dinosaurs" allegedly living here - relatives of Nessie. Labynkyr is the largest of the lakes of Yakutia. The length of the reservoir is 14 km, the width reaches 4 km, and the depth reaches 50 m. The lake lies in a deep valley of the river of the same name at an altitude of 600 m above sea level. They are "piled" with numerous skerries of the most extraordinary, bizarre outlines. The legends associated with the "dinosaur" may well be caused by the local stupa-like giants up to 2-3 meters long.


Yakutia is a country of ancient hunting and fishing traditions. This is one of the rarest places on the planet, where the purity of nature and the diversity of flora and fauna are preserved. In Yakutia, there are 10 most valuable species of fur-bearing animals, 6 species of wild hoofed animals, about 20 species of waterfowl and upland game. This is the only place in the world where the black crane, pink seagull and white Siberian crane inhabit. Elk, red deer, reindeer, bighorn sheep, white and brown bears, foxes, sables, wolverines inhabit the unspoiled nature. Red fish, burbot, grayling are found in mountain lakes, omul, chir, taimen, nelma, pike and whitefish are found in rivers. Yakut fish has high taste qualities.

In Yakutia, tourists can visit the Kingdom of Permafrost, which is a huge glacier inside the mountain, decorated by a team of professional ice sculptors. In the winter, at minus fifty degrees, the thermometer does not fall below -10 C here, and in the summer, in hot weather, the temperature does not rise above -4 C.

Not far from the highest point of the Tuymaada valley, the pointed mountain Chochur Muran there is the Chochur Muran Ethnographic Center, which was built in memory of the Cossack pioneers, who founded Yakutsk in 1632 as an outpost for developing North-Eastern Russia. Here you can taste dishes of the Yakut, Russian, European cuisines, ride a snowmobile, dog sledding, admire a collection of old things and a winter pond with waterfowl, visit the kennel of the Yakut husky.

Since 2000, the Atlasov family ethno-manor has been operating, the territory and ensemble of which expands every year. The museums, temples, dwellings of this complex are an example of the national-cultural architectural heritage of the indigenous peoples of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia).

There is a year-round Orto-Doydu zoo, the collection of which consists of more than 120 species of animals of different geographical zones. The exhibition presents not only native, but also exotic for Yakutia species of animals. Also the Orto-Doydu zoo keeps such rare, listed in the Red Book of animals, as the golden eagle, white-tailed eagle, Asian grouse, small swan, crane belle, sika deer, Amur tiger, musk ox, beaver.


Constant interest among tourists is folklore, folk art, national crafts, symbols of religious and ideological outlook of the Yakuts. The climate of Yakutia is sharply continental, temperature fluctuations from +40 ° C in the summer to -60 ° C in the winter. Within the territory of the republic, in Oymyakon, there is the Pole of Cold of the Northern Hemisphere of the planet, where -71.2 ° C was recorded as the lowest temperature.

In the winter, the low altitude of the sun causes a short day throughout the territory of Yakutia, and polar nights come to the areas beyond the Arctic Circle, darkness and twilight reign for several months. Sometimes a clear night sky is lit up with bright flashes of the Northern lights. Winter is long, cold and dry. In most territory of Yakutia, the lowest temperatures are observed in January, and on the islands the coldest is February. In southern and southwestern regions, low temperatures can drop to minus 58 ...- 62 ° C, on the sea coasts and on islands - to minus 46 ...- 52 ° C, in central regions - to minus 61 ...- 66 ° C.

Summer is time for white nights: the length of daylight reaches 20 hours at the latitude of Yakutsk, and in the north the sun shines day and night without setting below the horizon. Summer is short, mostly dry with relatively high temperatures. The warmest month is July. From May to August, the highest temperatures are in Central Yakutia. The average July temperature in central, southwestern and southern regions on comparatively lowland areas is about 17 ... 19 ° C.

Transition periods — spring and autumn — are very short. Spring lasts about a month. The snow does not melt so much as it evaporates.


Souvenirs: national shoes, semi-precious stones, mammoth bones and tusks, furs and beads, silver and gold jewelry, paintings by local artists, works of decorative art.

Traditional products include birch barkware and items made from wood. A nice souvenir is a wooden carved choron - a bowl for koumiss or a Yakut knife.

Cuisine and restaurants

The Yakut cuisine largely retained the features of ancient dishes of the nomadic Turks, but also experienced significant influence of the Mongolian, sub-Arctic and Russian cuisines. The basis of food of the indigenous peoples of Yakutia is meat, dairy and fish dishes. Salted, smoked and dried fish of different varieties, all kinds of dishes from milk, cream and sour cream, meat - not just beef but also venison, elk meat, bear and young horse meat.    

Meat and fish are very often used raw and, moreover, only in winter, when one can chop up stroganina (sliced frozen fish or meat), which is eaten with spicy seasoning.
