Biggest achievement of Yakutia in Year of Ecology

The increase of specially protected areas (PAs) in Yakutia to one million square kilometers (37.1% of the region's area) Minister of Nature Protection of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) Sakhamin Afanasiev called the largest achievement of the republic in the Year of Ecology and Protected Areas in Russia. He said this on October 12 at a meeting of Coordinating Commission of the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Russian Federation.

Reporting on the work to increase the biodiversity, the Minister said that in September musk oxen from Yamal were released in the Bulun Arctic district, an inspection of monitoring sites of rare birds listed in the Red Data Books of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) is going on, in late October - early November, the experimental flock of forest bison is planned to be released into the natural habitat (in the "Sinyaya" Nature Park).

One of the significant events of the Year of Ecology was 2nd Ecologists Congress of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) in April, said Afanasiev.  Based on its results, a resolution and a list of priority measures for improving the environmental situation in municipalities were approved. According to him, municipalities implement targeted environmental protection programs. "This year, it is planned to allocate 190 million rubles for these programs. Municipalities carried out more than 2.5 thousand of ecological and educational events. There were 2 600 clean-up events for landscaping and planting of greenery, in which more than 114 thousand people took part. Similar plans were also made by large enterprises that conduct economic activities on the territory of the republic," he said.

This year, in order to widely inform the public about the state of the environment, the Ministry of Natural Resources of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia) plans to launch the first stage of the information system "Ecological passport of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia)," said Afanasiev.
