The head of Yakutia, Aisen Nikolaev, announced the creation of a new structure within the government - Ministry for Development of the Arctic of the Sakha Republic (Yakutia). He announced this on Monday, speaking with a message to the State Assembly of Il Tumen.
“I decided to establish a ministry for development of the Arctic of the Republic of Sakha (Yakutia). The economic growth of the northern uluses of the republic is today associated with the formation of the North-Yakut support zone of the development of the Arctic zone. Emphasis will be placed on the development of transport infrastructure around the NSR, the reconstruction of ports, the creation of a high-tech Zhatai Shipyard, the construction of which will begin in 2019,” he said.
Nikolaev noted that the ministry will be engaged in the integrated development of the northern territories. In his opinion, the work of the existing State Committee on the Affairs of the Arctic "has been reduced to the regulation of traditional activities: reindeer herding and fishing."
“The development of the Arctic requires an integrated approach. It is impossible to reclaim it on impulse, by selected reforms. The scale of challenges requires a completely new level and quality of management,” the head of Yakutia noted.
