How many indigenous peoples live in Yakutia

August 9 - International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1994. In Russia there are more than 40 indigenous low-numbered peoples with a total population of about 280 thousand.

The Evenkis

Self-name - Evenkil, which became an official ethnonym in 1931, the old name - the Tungus. Some Evenk groups were known as Orochenes, Birars, Manegras, and Solons.  Language - Evenki, belongs to the Tungus-Manchu group of the Altaic language family. There are three groups of dialects: northern, southern and eastern. Each of these is subdivided into dialects. The Russian language is widespread; many Evenkis living in Yakutia and Buryatia also speak the Yakut and Buryat languages.

The Evens

Self-name - Evens, in ethnographic literature are known as Lamuts (from the Even word ‘Lamu’ – ‘sea’). Regional self-names - orochiel, ilkan and others. The Koryaks called them koyayamko, koyayamkyn - reindeer camp. In the Even language more than ten dialects, united in the eastern, middle and western dialect groups. The Even language is considered to be native to 43.9% of the representatives of this people. Settling of the Tungus-speaking tribes from the Baikal region took place in the first millennium AD.

The Yukagirs

Self-name - odul, vadul, which probably mean "strong", "mighty." Currently, the Yukagir language is spoken by about 400 people. There are two dialects - tundra and taiga. They also speak Russian and Yakut languages. The writing was developed in 1970 on the basis of the Russian alphabet and officially adopted in 1983. The basis for the literary language is the tundra dialect.

The Chukchi

Self-name - lygioravetl'an ("real people"). Widespread are self-names according to the place of residence or migrations: uvelelyt – “Uelen people,” chaalyt – “roaming along the Chaun rtiver,” etc. They speak in the Chukchi language, which has several very close dialects, which have preserved quite well in our days. The writing was created in 1931 on a Latin graphic basis, replaced later by the Russian alphabet.

The Dolgans

Self-name - Dolgan, tyakikhi. The Dolgans received their name after the name of one of the Evenki's Dolgans, which became an ethnonym for the whole people. They speak the Dolgan dialect of the Yakut language. Some researchers consider it an independent language. Inside the Dolgan language, depending on the place of residence of its speakers, there are dialectal differences.  There are three relative groups of Dolgan: Western, Eastern and Popigai-Anabar.
