A powerful team of wrestlers from Island of Freedom
The Cuban national team in freestyle wrestling, which will compete in the group A with the teams of Russia, Japan and Turkey, announces the strongest line-up for the World Cup in Yakutsk, the official website of the 2019 World Cup said.
The team from Cuba includes both the most experienced veterans of the national team and the promising youth. To this we add that almost all the wrestlers from this squad took part in the World Cup in Budapest, successful for the Cuban team (the Cuban team ranked 4th in the team event at the 2018 World Cup - ed.).
The undisputed leader of the team will be the 35-year-old athlete from Guantanamo Yowlys Bonne Rodriguez. He is the current world champion in the weight category up to 61 kg, two-time bronze medalist at the World Championships and the 2015 Pan-American Champion in Toronto.
In the weight category up to 97 kg, the team will be represented by Reineris Salas Perez from Havana. The two-time silver and bronze medalist of the world championships, the winner of the Pan American Games and the five-time winner of the Panamerica Championships may well meet again with the Russian Tank Abdulrashid Sadulaev, but now at the Triumph Sports Training Center in Yakutsk.
Well, in the heaviest weight category up to 125 kg, the national team of Cuba will be represented, by the way, by the Greco-Roman style wrestler Oscar Pino Hinds. This almost two-meter giant is a two-time bronze medalist of the last two world championships in classical wrestling. To this we add that Pino Hinds has been a triumphant of Pan American Championship for three years in a row (2016, 2017, 2018).
The rest of the wrestlers from Cuba also deserve your attention: Alejandro Valdes - bronze medalist of the last two world championships in Paris and Budapest, multiple champion of the Pan American Championship; Franklin Maren Castillo - bronze medalist of the 2018 World Cup, Pan American champion; Geandry Garzon Caballero - 2010 World Championships bronze medalist; Reineri Andreu Ortega - current winner of the world championship u23, winner of the Pan American Championship; Yurieski Torreblanca Queralta - two-time winner of the Pan American Championship; Lazaro Daniel Hernandez Luis - 4th place at the 2018 World Cup.
It is interesting to note that the team appears to be stable in almost all lines in light, medium and heavy weight categories. And with such a strong composition, the national team of the Republic of Cuba is quite capable of fighting for high places. Recall that in last year’s World Cup in Iowa City (USA), this team missed a bronze medal in the fight for the third place having yielded to the Japanese team (4: 6). This time they got into the same subgroup with the teams of Russia and Turkey.
